One of the great things about being a freelance photographer is the different people I have the chance to get to know in the course of my work. Since I specialize in longer term in-depth projects, I have the privileged of getting very familiar with my subjects.
Chris Garcia is one of those people.
I met Chris while working on my ongoing Fight Journal project. Chris is a fighter and coach at Charlies Combat Club. He was one of the first people I met when I started the project. I remember the first day I showed up at the gym, walking through the door fully prepared to find myself dealing with the most aggressive people imaginable.
Within minutes Chris’ quiet, thoughtful and confident demeanor shattered that perception.
When Jessica, now his wife, asked me if I would photograph their wedding she explained to me that she feared his 1,000 watt smile would remain hidden in the presence of an unfamilliar photographer.
I could not let this happen.
It was a privileged to be a part of their wedding.
And don’t be fooled my that smile. Kind as he may be, Chris would tear you to shreds if you were standing across from him in the octagon.
