ELLE MEN: CHINA

Posted by – October 17, 2011

A couple of months ago I was contacted by the photo editor for ELLE MEN magazine in China who wanted to do a story on local Mixed Martial Arts in the Pacific Northwest.   Here are the the tearsheets for the story that was just published in October.

I must say it is quite something to see my words translated into Chinese.

Make It Art : On Sale Now

Posted by – August 26, 2010

For 20 years Book-It has been adapting, producing, and staging great works of classic and contemporary literature in their signature style which preserves the narrative text as it is written by transforming it into dialogue spoken by the actors.

Recent recipients of the 2010 Mayors Arts Award, and having just completed their 20th anniversary season, Book-It is a Seattle treasure.

Make It Art is a limited edition magazine featuring photographs of the rehearsal process for a re-staging of The Cider House Rules Part 1: Here in St. Cloud’s. Adapted from the novel by John Irving, it is the show that put them on the national map when it premiered 1996.

You can preview Make it Art, or buy it here.

Chris & Jessica

Posted by – July 21, 2010

One of the great things about being a freelance photographer is the different people I have the chance to get to know in the course of my work. Since I specialize in longer term in-depth projects, I have the privileged of getting very familiar with my subjects.

Chris Garcia is one of those people.

I met Chris while working on my ongoing Fight Journal project. Chris is a fighter and coach at Charlies Combat Club. He was one of the first people I met when I started the project. I remember the first day I showed up at the gym, walking through the door fully prepared to find myself dealing with the most aggressive people imaginable.

Within minutes Chris’ quiet, thoughtful and confident demeanor shattered that perception.

When Jessica, now his wife, asked me if I would photograph their wedding she explained to me that she feared his 1,000 watt smile would remain hidden in the presence of an unfamilliar photographer.

I could not let this happen.

It was a privileged to be a part of their wedding.

And don’t be fooled my that smile. Kind as he may be, Chris would tear you to shreds if you were standing across from him in the octagon.
